Are you visiting Kosice for the biggest ice hockey event of 2011? Here is a simple guide to help you.
Kosice is one of two cities that are going to host World Championship in Ice Hockey in 2011. Since the city of Kosice is used to hosting hockey matches, there should not be any issues with the organization of this event. "Generally we sell more than 8,000 tickets for matches in our league, and now we are selling around 6,400 tickets for the event. It means that we have experience with this kind of situation," said Richard Raši, mayor of Kosice.
Of course, taking into account increased security level, higher concentration of visitors and possible road blocks, there may be things to look out for at beginning. Visitors are advised to use public transportation to travel to and from the event.
Train and Bus Station are located fairly close to the venue, only about 20 minute walk from the Arena. Also, the city council promised increased transportation from these points to Steel Arena. You can take Tram #6 to station "Zimny Stadion - Ice Rink" which will depart in short intervals. Notifications which are also available in English announce the next stop. There will also be about 80 volunteers who are going to help people with directions to their destinations and the Arena next to points like Stations, Airport, Hotels and various city monuments.
If you arrive by a plane, you can take bus number 23 to get to the city center as well as straight to the Arena. Your station is "Dom Umenia - The Palace of Art". From here it is a 3 minute walk to Steel Arena, just follow the navigation signs that will be posted. The bus trip from the airport takes about 11 minutes. You can also take a taxi to Steel Arena for about 10-12Euros. We recommend that you to ask the taxi driver about the estimated prize before you enter the cab to avoid any possible problems. Some taxi drivers may even give you a prize.
Parking next to Steel Arena is available in the Parking Garage, but may be difficult during the Championship. Just follow the signs around. City officials claimed they won't allow cars in Steel Arena without hockey tickets. You should have a ticket if you are going to Steel Arena. We recommend that you use public transportation and leave your car parked in your hotel, in the parking lot of Optima Shopping Center or the nearby parking zones of the city part of KVP and take a but to Dom Umenia - The Palace of Art station. The two latter parking options are free.
The list of Matches played in Kosice during the Hockey Championship:
We recommend that you book your accommodation prior to arrival, as most of the Hotels are already fully booked and you may end up not being able to secure anything in a short period of time. To look for competitive prices and bigger availability, you may consider the cities of Presov (30 minutes by bus) or Poprad (1 hour by train). In Poprad you are also located next to the highest mountains of Slovakia, which ars a very popular tourist destination and will treat you to a spectacular view. Poprad also has a smaller international airport operating flights to/from across Europe.
The biggest fan village will be located on Hlavna Street next to Hilton Hotel and Dargov Shopping center. This is the official fan village of the World Championship in Kosice where every match will be broadcasted on large screens. Local councils also said that secondary fan villages will be located next to Steel Arena, the Amphitheater and in KVP part of the city. Smaller ones are going to be located throughout the whole city including the suburbs.
Kosice is the European Capital of Culture of 2013. There will be various cultural events going on simultaneously with the Championship. The "Days of Kosice" are celebrated during the first week of May as a celebration of the city establishment. Other events from Fan villages, various stages in city center, theaters and cinemas, museums, galleries and historical monuments to the vibrant night life starting in the city after matches will make Kosice the place to be and the place to return to. Many sightseeing tours will be provided to visitors in various languages for free. Many shop owners have also agreed to the ethical codex that asks them not to increase their prizes during WC in Ice hockey. The very next day after the Championship Steel Arena hosts concert of David Guetta.
The Atmosphere on Hlavna Street, literally translated as Main Street, is always amazing. Local cafeterias with their summer patios where you can enjoy beer, cocktails or cappuccinos, hockey fan village, stages for concerts and some of the oldest city monuments in Europe come together to create an experience you will never forget.
